Outdoor table football for the patio, garden, balcony or poolside: where to put it and how to enjoy it
In short.
Few things bring a patio or garden to life quite like a table football table: impromptu matches, rematches while the barbecue heats up, every generation gathered round the same table. To get the most out of it outdoors, set it on a flat, solid surface (patio, paving, decking or the hard surround of a pool), leave enough room around it to play comfortably, level it using the adjustable feet and keep it under a cover between games. Built for life outside, Cornilleau outdoor table football tables play just as well indoors as out, all year round.

Why table football transforms summer in the garden
There are garden games that come out of the shed twice a year, and there are the ones that become the heart of the home. Table football belongs firmly in the second camp. Set up on the patio or in the garden, it turns a lingering barbecue into an impromptu tournament, brings kids and grown-ups together round the same table, and gets everyone outside in high spirits.
It's simple, instant fun: a game starts in seconds, there are no complicated rules and no skill level required. Kids take on their parents, grandparents rediscover their touch, friends keep coming back for "just one more". And because the table lives outside, you're no longer at the mercy of yesterday's weather or a cluttered garage: it's always ready for a match.
Outdoor table football or classic garden games: which to choose?
A kickabout, badminton or garden cricket all need space, enough players, decent weather and, sometimes, a fair bit of energy. And there's nearly always something missing: the shuttlecock has gone over the fence, the stumps have vanished or you're one player short.
Table football is far more versatile, and that's exactly what makes it such a hit in the garden:
- Two is enough: no need to round up a team. One opponent and you're off.
- Every age, every level: a seven-year-old can beat an adult, which rarely happens at tennis. It's a great leveller that brings the generations together.
- No setting up: no net to put up, no pitch to mark out, nothing to pump up. Grab the handles and play.
- Short, action-packed games: perfect between courses, while the barbecue gets going or to settle who's doing the washing-up.
- Rain or shine: an outdoor model shrugs off sunshine and a passing shower alike, whereas badminton is over at the first drop of rain.
Where an outdoor table tennis table or an outdoor pool table needs more room around it, table football is happy with a corner of the patio. It doesn't replace those games, it complements them: in fact, many households gradually build a proper outdoor games area by bringing all three together.
Outdoor table football takes up less space than you think
It's the number one concern, and it's often unfounded. You don't need a big garden for table football: a patio, a corner of a courtyard or a covered area is plenty. The real footprint is smaller than most people expect, for two reasons.
→ First, telescopic rods. On Cornilleau table football tables, the rods don't poke out the far side of the cabinet: the footprint is simply the table itself, plus room for players to stand on either side. That saves the 30 to 40 cm (roughly 12 to 16 in) of extra clearance needed by traditional through-rods.
→ Second, the compact Origin Duo, designed for one-on-one play, fits where a full-size table simply wouldn't. For exact dimensions and a side-by-side look at both formats, see our table football buying guide and our outdoor table football tables.
Where to put an outdoor table football table
Ideally, you want a flat, solid surface with a bit of room around it. Beyond that, each spot has its own quirks.
Here are our favourites:
On the patio
The top choice. A patio gives you a hard, even, well-drained surface just a few steps from the house and the garden table. Just check it's level: paving slabs and decking are often laid with a slight fall so rainwater runs off, but the adjustable feet easily take care of gentle slopes and small bumps. On decking, make sure each foot sits squarely on a board rather than over a gap. Choose a spot that leaves a clear path around the table, so nobody ends up pressed against a wall to play.
In the garden, on the lawn
Playing on grass is perfectly doable, as long as the table is stable. A lawn is rarely flat and stays soft underfoot, especially after a wet spell: stood straight on it, the table can sink slightly and shift mid-match. Choose the flattest area, adjust the feet one by one until the table is perfectly level and, if needed, set a few paving slabs or a small section of decking under the legs. Loose gravel calls for the same approach. Your game will be all the more precise for it.
By the pool or hot tub
A table football table by the pool is the stuff of summer dreams, and in many British gardens the hot tub is where the party ends up. Either way, two precautions apply. For the setting, place the table on the pool surround or on a stable, slip-resistant surface, leaving enough room that nobody steps back mid-celebration and ends up in the water. For the equipment, damp air and pool or hot tub chemicals make a clear case for an outdoor table football table: stainless steel fixings, an HPL laminate cabinet and a Gerflex playing surface are built for outdoor conditions, whereas an indoor table would soon suffer.
Under a pergola, on a covered patio or on a balcony
A partly covered space has plenty going for it: you're sheltered from showers or strong sun while still enjoying the fresh air. Table football fits naturally there, all year round. On a balcony, simply check access and the space to move around the table. And for smaller balconies, the Origin Duo two-player table football is your best ally: ideal for city flats with outdoor space. Worth knowing before you order: UK deliveries are made to the ground floor only (five steps maximum) and the table arrives boxed for self-assembly. For a first-floor balcony, line up a few extra pairs of hands and check the stairs, lift and doorways in advance.
How to set up your outdoor table football table
Once you've chosen your spot, a few simple steps will ensure a great game and a table that lasts. Nothing technical, just common sense
1. Start with a solid base
A quality table football table is heavy, which is good news for stability. It still needs ground that won't move: paving, outdoor tiles, decking, concrete or a well-compacted path are all ideal. Avoid soft or waterlogged ground, which makes it hard to keep the table level and spoils the game.
2. Level the table
Don't skip this step: if the table is even slightly off, the ball will always roll to the same side. Origin table football tables have four adjustable feet with 5 cm (about 2 in) of travel. Adjust them one at a time, using the ball in the centre of the pitch as your guide, until the surface is perfectly flat. On a gently sloping patio or uneven garden, this is what makes all the difference.
3. Leave room to play comfortably
Position the table so you can move freely around it and work the handles without catching a wall, a low garden wall or a planter. Thanks to telescopic rods, there's no need to allow for the extra clearance of through-rod tables: the table plus room for players to move is all you need. For exact clearances by format, our table football buying guide has all the details.
4. Think about sun, rain and drainage
An outdoor table football table is built to handle both rain and sun, but a little care keeps it looking its best. During a heatwave, a spot with some shade in the hottest part of the day is more pleasant for players and table alike. After a shower, a quick wipe of the playing surface and you're ready to go. For long-term care, take a look at our maintenance advice.
5. Cover it between games
This is the habit that makes all the difference over the years. Between games, pop on a protective cover: it fastens under the table and has built-in pop-ups to help rainwater run off. The surface stays clean, dry and ready to play. Need a reminder on assembly? Each product page includes the assembly instructions and technical sheet to download.
Indoors or out: play wherever you like
Good news if you can't decide: putting a table football table outside never stops you playing indoors too. A table designed for outdoor use is tougher than average, so it moves easily from patio to living room or garden room, depending on the season or your mood. The reverse isn't true: an indoor table won't stand up to the weather for long. This versatility, a hallmark of the Cornilleau outdoor table football range, is covered in more detail in our buying guide. And if you're new to the game, our game tips will help you get to grips with the rods and improve fast.

Create a proper outdoor games area
Table football soon calls for company. To keep the good times going in the garden or on the patio, Cornilleau brings the same outdoor expertise to other games. For pool, our outdoor pool tables take a dining top and double as a garden dining table. For table tennis, our Origin outdoor table tennis tables stand up to the weather and transform in moments. The whole Play-Style collection shares the same design language, for a garden that looks cohesive and stylish.
Outdoor table football for businesses
Pub beer gardens, holiday parks, glamping sites, hotels, restaurants, offices or co-working spaces: outdoors, table football is a brilliant way to bring people together, provided it's set up with care. The same principles apply, with extra attention to movement and safety in walkways, where telescopic rods really come into their own. Also factor in the weight (77 kg for the Origin, 58 kg for the Duo) when planning delivery and installation. Our UK team can advise on commercial projects.
FAQ: setting up outdoor table football
What's the best surface for outdoor table football?
A flat, hard and stable surface: patio, outdoor tiles, decking, concrete, paving slabs or a compacted path. Avoid soft or waterlogged ground and loose gravel. On a lawn, choose the flattest area and adjust the feet carefully, adding paving slabs under the legs if needed.
Can you put a table football table by a pool or hot tub?
Yes, and it's a great way to liven up the summer. Place the table on a stable, slip-resistant surface, with enough room that players can't step back into the water. Damp air and pool or hot tub chemicals call for a model designed for outdoor use, with stainless steel fixings and treated materials.
How do you level a table football table on a sloping patio?
With the adjustable feet. Origin tables have four feet with 5 cm of adjustment. Adjust them one by one until a ball placed in the centre of the pitch no longer rolls to one side. That's what guarantees a fair game on slightly sloping ground.
Does outdoor table football need fixing to the ground?
Not at home: the substantial weight of a quality table football table keeps it stable. Simply stand it on flat, stable ground and adjust the feet. In a busy public space, the priority is a clear, safe spot away from walkways
Can an outdoor foosball table stand full sun?
Yes, all Cornilleau outdoor models are designed and tested to withstand UV as well as rain. That said, not every table sold as "outdoor" by other brands offers the same resistance: it depends on how it's built and the materials used. In very strong sun, a partly shaded spot during the hottest hours is more comfortable for players, and a cover protects the table when you're not playing.
Can you leave outdoor table football out in the rain?
A table designed for outdoor use handles a shower without any trouble. Once the rain stops, a quick wipe of the playing surface is all it needs before the next game. Between sessions, a protective cover is recommended to shield the table from the weather (bear in mind that not all covers are waterproof).
How long does it take to set up an outdoor table football table?
Once the table is assembled, moving it to a new spot is simply a case of positioning it, adjusting the four feet and checking there's room around it: a few minutes is all it takes. For the initial assembly, every table comes with full instructions.
Should you bring outdoor table football in over winter?
There's no need with an outdoor model, which is designed to stay outside all year round. A protective cover is highly recommended when you're not playing. An indoor table football table, on the other hand, must always be kept under cover.
